This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving, and for the past few years, my husband, kids and I have kept it sort of low-key.  There is always a dinner or lunch with grandparents, and an annual Chinese Restaurant Thanksgiving with very close friends of ours (happening tomorrow), but for the most part, we've had dinner and gave thanks quietly at home.

Today, however, we decided to change it up by checking out a local diner that we've been intrigued by for a few months. As we are visiting our cottage, we thought, why not take in the local eats while we're here? (Translation: Both the husband and I were too lazy to cook anything)

As we had both our kids with us, a family diner was exactly what Jeremy and I were in search of, and judging from the outside, Gus's seemed perfect. It was casual, welcoming, and seemed easy-going right when you walked in. Sure, the furniture didn't match and there were semi-tacky knick-knacks galore, but hey, aren't those always part of the charm found in small town greasy spoons? This iner seems to be a favourite with the locals, as we overheard patrons saying things like: "How're are the kids doing?" or "See you next week!"

We slid into our booth and scanned our surroundings: it was a good sized place, clean, friendly staff and even a kitchen window where phrases like "Order Up" were shouted from the hidden cooks in the back. My lunch choice was easy:  the Thanksgiving Dinner Turkey special, complete with stuffing, cranberry sauce, salad and a slice of pie for dessert.  (Very few people in my family actually like turkey, so sadly, we don't cook one up every year)  A cheese pizza for the kids and a turkey club for Jeremy, and our Thanksgiving luncheon was complete.

Jeremy and I were jealous of some of our patrons dishes as they whisked by us to be served: Fish and Chips, burgers, poutine, oversized salads....all of them looked delicious.  I think our expectations raised a few points higher after checking out what other people were eating.

And Gus delivered. My turkey dinner was so big, I had to take half of it home, even after a few nibbles from Jeremy.  The homemade stuffing was so tasty, and the slices of meat so tender and mashed potatoes and gravy so smooth....I felt like I had been invited to someone's home for an old-fashioned, traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you, Gus!   Jeremy was equally pleased with his generous Club sandwich, used with REAL turkey, and not deli meats. He even topped his side dish of fries with gravy.  The kids enjoyed their freshly homemade pizza, which was served on a sliver "stage."  It also helped that they made is super, extra cheesy.

Our server was lovely and the food was delicious. It was probably a little costlier for what we wanted to pay for a lunch in a greasy spoon (about $60 in total), but in the words of my "borderline-food-snob" husband, "The quality of the food was well worth it."

Gus and Cheryl of Gus's Family Restaurant in Picton, Ontario, you have a new family of fans from the city in us. Thanks for being part of my little family's Thanksgiving this year!

I'm already looking forward to going back and trying the fish and chips!

Hungry hungry..... As we walk along Picton main st.  And stumble on Gus' family restaurant. Going in the restaurant it would be an old diner type restaurant, old people eating so i wont be expecting much. As i look at their menu,  its a huge menu consisting of fried apps, salads, greek items, breakfast, chicken and ribs pizzas, it was pretty much all over the place  in my opinion. Sticked with the half bbq chicken order and my girlfriend ordered the seafoood platter. We also had the daily soup for our starter, chicken noodle soup. The soup came with packet crackers which i wouldnt really care about, its an old school diner and we cant really expect much. Soups light and reminds me of something ill eat when im sick.  Our entrees came i had the half chicken that i enjoyed! Tender roasted chicken brushed with bbq sauce.
Coleslaw was nice and fresh loved it! The seafood platter was a disappointment though, fried torpedo shrimp, deep fried over cooked scallop , beer battered haddock, nothing great on this plate.
All in all, i didnt expect too much upon arrival and the prices were fair and pretty cheap already. Worth the money? Yes. Just dont expect a 5 star meal here.

Waitress rude, not great service culture. Food was not bad. The food was prepared in the timely, it was clean.
